Today during the opening ceremony of the International Career Festival Monika Altmaier, the HR Director of FAO, gave some guidelines to the participants in howto begin an international career, with a special focus on the opportunity that FAO can give as an international organization. FAO is an organization which concerns about eradicating hunger and poverty through the development of programs based on the respect of natural resources.
FAO’s main aims are to help people facing problems related to the lack of food and malnutrition as well as reduce rural poverty through changing the ways agriculture, forestry and fisheries being conducted. According to forecast, by 2050 population is expected to increase by 2 billion units. This data can make people wonder if food will be enough for all. Thorough a program called “Food For All”, Monika and FAO believe this goal is achievable. This is an international goal which requires an international enrolment. Then What kind of skills are requested to start an international career in an organization like FAO?
As the director of this organization, Monika focused her attention on explaining particular skills needed to work in this field. The first one is to embrace diversity and be open-minded to different cultures and points of views, then it is very important to believe in long-term success and be able to balance the differences in a multicultural context.
This field offers a variety of opportunities which allows you to gain the job experience, learns new skills as well as gives you the chance to represent your country and work in a global community.
At the end of the speech, she describes two different categories an international career can be divided in to: professional and general services. She also made a list of the professional post requirements, which include academic qualification, work experience and a good knowledge of at least two of the UN languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian). The participants had the chance to acquaint themselves with the opportunities for students and recent graduates that FAO offers, such as junior professional programs, associate professional officer program, FAO internship program and other volunteering opportunities.

According to the Director of the online magazine OFCS.Report, Francesca Musacchio, nowadays Journalism is facing a great challenge following the changes due to new media of communication appeared during the last years.Their project, she explained, is a challenge and gives a new and fresh point of view in the field of journalism. In fact, the main goal of this magazine is to experiment new editorial lines and policies allowing young journalists to be the protagonists of their own reportage. This is a new kind of communication that combines several formats and fuses together the reality in their videos with new media, such as Internet and Social Networks. They could be defined as an hybrid, since, as the Director claimed, they write on printed paper but they are not just a newspaper, they use videos but they not consider themselves as a Television programme or a Radio programme. They are all this, and much more. The main slogan of OFCS.Report, “La percezione della sicurezza” (“The Perception of Security”), perfectly reflects their main topic, which is talking about everything and everyone they think is worth focus on. This online magazine is divided in four macro-areas, that discuss International Relations, Economics, Artistic Heritage and Wellness. According to their statistics, 60% of OFCS.Report users read the International Relations section, and they are aged among roughly 20 years and 40 years. The greatest perks of this newest project is that, unlike Television Journalism, there are not space and time limits thanks to the web. In fact, they can examine in depth any topic they are interested in and when they want to. For instance, their aim may be to film or write an investigative report on various topics, as the US Presidential Elections held in 2016. Although their goal is to create a new point of view for journalism, they can not avoid the most important rules of this field, such as not spreading fake news (a real and complicated problem for journalism in our era).Director Musacchio concluded her intervention asking one intriguing question, “have you heard the music and songs playing outside? Did you ask yourselves what are these songs for? Who would like to find out and film a report about it?”. Questions, she explained, led by her own curiosity about the intriguing music. Curiosity must be the main input in journalistic field, since journalists must look for news and the truth everyday and, most importantly, verify it.Martina Fedeli
Rome. Minister Francesca Tardioli was the first guest speaker at the opening ceremony of the Rome International Careers Festival. She is in charge of the Foreign Affairs Department in Rome.
Minister Tardioli gave a speech regarding job opportunities for the students within the diplomatic field as well as expressing her personal ideas and insights about a career in this sector. She expressed her joy seeing so many young people and encouraged them to start to act and be committed to your aspirations as soon as possible. "Listen to yourself", was her piece of advice. Students need to follow their passions and dreams, focus on themselves and choose their academic path accordingly. Above all they have to take advantage of what university can offer by learning to adapt to new and multicultural challenges and realities.
She talked about internships and open positions within the department of Foreign Affairs highlighting that an equal opportunity is given to all and everyone there is entitled to the same rights. An intern position typically lasts three months and a basic salary is provided. Interns can take part to different initiatives, attend international conferences and events as well as organising them. It is a chance to show them the tasks and responsibilities a diplomatic has to carry out.
Are you the right person to fit into this field? - According to the Minister, this can be your future career if you believe in dialogue and negotiation to achieve goals and you stand for diplomacy as a rule-based organisations.
